R-Series Mechanical Sand Reclamation Systems

The R-Series is Palmer's original and most robust Mechanical Sand Reclamation system.  The R-Series features a super duty attrition mill with replaceable wear plates and screens.  The attrition mill also comes with standard primary screen cleaning doors.  The high efficiency classifier does an outstanding job of fines removal.  The unit also features, as standard, a Palmer built bucket elevator designed specifically for foundry sands.  The R-Series is sold as an integral system including all necessary components for complete system operation. Capacities from 1 to 10 tons per hour

General - Sand Reclamation

The R-Series Mechanical Sand Reclamation System is designed as a complete no-bake sand reclamation system. Rugged durability is fundamental in the base design, and common options can add incredible control over reclaimed sand temperature and loss-on-ignition. The R-Series is simple to maintain, and spare wear parts are commonly available at a low price.

The R-Series Sand Reclamation systems can be custom arranged to fit your exact sand reclamation requirements and installation space.

The R-Series Sand Reclamation System includes as standard the attrition mill, feed elevator, screener, classifier, and discharge level control.

Attrition Mill

The R-Series Attrition Mill is a rugged, heavy-duty unit that is designed to provide constant, reliable reclamation, year after year. It is a top loading mill that contains no cross bars or grates that interfere with inspection of the primary screen or removal of tramp metal, gaggers, etc.

The attrition mill utilizes a dual screen agglomeration reduction system that is comprised of two perforated steel plates. The first is located in the bottom of the mill in the primary chamber and permits only loose sand and small lumps to feed into the secondary chamber. The second screen is located at the discharge flange of the secondary chamber and the discharge housing. It allows only grain size sand to exit the mill. Both screens are easily replaceable.

The attrition mill utilizes an adjustable output 3 phase vibrator which is bottom mounted to provide maximum agitation of the sand mass. Vibrator horsepower ratings for the R-1, R-3, R-5, and R-10 are 2, 4, 5, and dual 5 horsepower, respectively.

The attrition mill includes as standard a three sided tapered load frame to aide in loading efficiency.

The attrition mill is outfitted with a simple door arrangement for the cleaning and service of the primary screen.

Feed Elevator

The R-Series comes standard with a rugged bucket elevator used to transfer reclaimed sand from the discharge of the attrition mill to the top of the screener hopper. The elevator is easy to maintain and spare parts are available off-the-shelf.

This elevator was specifically designed by Palmer for use with foundry sands. Construction is extremely heavy and maintenance access is complete with each section of the elevator having full height access doors. Unit features a standard OEM gear head drive.

Screener

Prior to classification, all reclaimed sand passes through a durable screener assembly. This screen provides the third level of screening to the sand. This is the removal point of all material larger than grain size. The screen tramp discharge feeds out a flanged chute into the customer's choice of tramp material containers (barrel, box, bin, etc.)

Screening is accomplished using a high frequency pneumatic vibrator rigidly mounted to the screener. The added vibration speeds the screening process and segregates agglomerated materials like compound grains, shell sand core remnants, metallics, and the like.

The screener hopper includes a 4" dust takeoff designed for 200 cfm of dust collection.

Classifier

The R-Series fluidized bed classifier is fabricated from 1/4" section steel and utilizes a constant pressure blower for fluidization pressure. The blower eliminates fluidized bed membrane saturation problems associated with the use of compressed air.

A 6" diameter exhaust is provided for connection to an existing dust collection system.

Sand that is discharged from the classifier is ready for use. The discharge of the classifier can be configured for use with a bucket elevator, pneumatic transporter, dump hopper, etc.

The classifier is constructed from three major components:

  • A base, or plenum chamber, into which fluidizing air is blown by a blower.
  • A fluidizing plate constructed of ASTM A-514 Abrasion Resistant Steel
  • A main body, which serves as a cover and pressure chamber

The plenum chamber serves not only as a base, but also a means of distributing the incoming air to the underside of the fluidizing deck. The deck is a steel plate filled with self-cleaning, covered orifices through which the air is passed in order to fluidize the sand resting on it.

The main body is mounted on top of the base (plenum chamber). It serves not only as a cover, but also as a classifying chamber.

The fluidizing action of the sand assists in polishing each grain, removing the fines produced by the casting process and transport of the sand. A negative pressure maintained over the bed by a dust collector (supplied by the customer or as an option) and controlled by a gate located between the collector and the classifier ensures that the fines are removed from the chamber and around the sand grains.

Fluidizing air is provided by a constant pressure blower driven by a TEFC motor that includes an inlet damper control. Inspection and cleaning panels, flanged discharge, 6" dust collection take-off, and air manifold connections are included.

Controls

All electrical controls are housed in a dust tight NEMA 12 enclosure. Electrical control components are based on the NEMA standard of controls. The controls feature two modes of operation.

  • "HAND" in which each aspect of the system is controlled by switches located in the door of the primary electrical enclosure.
  • "AUTO" in which the system is activated by a push button located in the door of the electrical enclosure. The system starts and stops itself automatically based on internal sand level sensors.

When the system is activated in automatic, the classifier operates on a continual basis. A high level proximity switch located in the elevator discharge controls the operation of the attrition mill and elevator, maintaining a constant supply of sand to the classifier. Ultimately, this high level controls also prevents plugging and damage to the elevator.

The control system has a master safety relay and emergency stop pushbutton on the machine control enclosure.
